1. Jackery Solar Generator 240

This portable, chic 240wh power station can be your best companion if you are someone who spends most of his day in the car or for traveling or camping or other purposes.

This sturdy, durable power station is easy to charge and can be charged by a wall or car outlet, or if your area has good sunlight, this power station can easily be replaced with your old batteries.

At least that’s what the instructions say. But, in reality, this power station takes almost a day to get a 60% charge when kept in the Arizona sunlight. If the Arizona sun could not charge it a little faster, not sure what could.

This power station comes up with a charger for cars and other appliances and an AC adapter, including a manual for users. Unfortunately, its charger is completely plastic-made, and it’s not waterproof.

The combination of orange and dark makes this charger looks attractive, but with a weight of 3kg, this is not something you can carry in your everyday bag. With an internal battery of 240watt, this battery can easily charge appliances that need fewer wh, like Phones, TV Mini coolers, Kettle, and Laptops.

However, it does not support appliances like a Blender, Electric Grill, Microwave, or refrigerator, whereby we managed to power a small fridge of 12v in our car. So you can power the refrigerator but of lesser power.

Furthermore, the MacBook being a power hog, we recommend you not to use 240 for charging it. We would suggest you go with the Jackery Explorer 500 for charging more powerful appliances.

We operated a 4W desk lamp, and the 240 lasted about 35 hours and 43 minutes. So, the battery in the 240 will last depending on the power of the appliance. You can’t plug 100-watt devices in and expect the battery to last all night.

This portable charger works well when fully charged, and we wouldn’t recommend charging your device while the battery is charging, as charging will take longer, which is not worth it.

Solar Generator Buying Guide

A generator that converts solar energy (sunlight) into electrical power is called a solar generator. You can store energy in this generator, which can be further used as a battery, or as backup power at your home, camping, or while traveling.

The entire process of power generation produces zero carbon emissions, making this generator an absolute favorite of the customer.

Apart from this, the other benefits provided by this generator make it increasingly popular among the people. If you are buying this generator for the first time then there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first and foremost steps in deciding what solar generator to buy depends upon the intended use of the generator. Whether you’re buying this generator for camping or as a backup power option for your house, depending upon the purpose of the use, you should further go ahead with size, price, power, and capacity.

Before we get into the complicated things, let’s clarify our basics about these solar generators. There are basically two types of generators that work on solar power. That is solar backup generators and portable solar generators.

Canvas Tent Buying Guide
  • Solar Backup Generators: For this, you need several batteries because the power they generate is usually massive, or we can say they give an output of very high wattage.

To charge such a generator at full capacity, you need to put it in the sun for a straight 48 hours.  The only disadvantage is their weight. They are extremely heavy. However,  they are massive enough to give power to an entire residence.

  • Portable Solar Generators: Compared to the solar backups they are lightweighted and you can take them with you, be it for camping, traveling, in cars or at home. as the name suggest, they are truly portable in nature.

You can charge them through solar panels. However, they do not have a large power capacity and you can’t use refrigerators, dishwashers, and other powerful appliances with these generators. plus, they also take more time to get charged fully due to the low wattage solar panels.

The lifespan of every Solar Generator varies, and there is no decided span of any generator. Given the age of the battery, the size, and the equipment connected, the generator can last from 3 to 23 hours.

There are six things you should consider before buying your desired solar generator.

  • Intended use: There are various purposes for solar generators. Some use it for camping and trips; some keep this power bank as a backup power option for their house.

So it depends from person to person, Depending upon the need or purpose of buying this generator, you should choose your generator.

For camping and traveling, you should go with a compact and easy-to-carry generator. For the purpose of backup at your office or house, you should go with a generator that provides large power.

Solar Inputs: Depending upon the requirements, you should further look into the battery capacity and solar input. Here, solar inputs mean the solar panel that collects the sunlight and converts it into power, which is further stored in the batteries.

The solar input will operate the generator for a particular time, and for different generators, there are different solar inputs. For example, the panels used in houses and residential properties have lower wattage capacity, which means they have fewer solar inputs and they are smaller in size.

  • Power output: The output from these generators works as electricity and fulfills your power needs that you might be used for charging your phones or for other purposes.

The output power from these batteries is measured in watts, and watt-hours (Wh) is the maximum power this device can deliver. watts denotes the maximum power provided by the device while it is running.

A power generator with 300Wh, for example, can store and power appliances that don’t exceed 300W.

  • Battery storage: As we know, the energy is saved in the batteries after capturing it from the panels. With these batteries, you light up your devices or charge them during blackouts.

If we talk about the capacity or the power these batteries can hold up to, it depends differently. length of the battery and the time is taken to exhaust the batteries completely. It depends from device to device.

For higher watts, you require high capacity batteries because the more the power of the device, the faster the battery will get exhausted.

  • Rating an invertor: You might get terrified after reading the heading, how can you rate an invertor. Don’t worry, understand the mechanism in a simpler way. there are two flows of current Direct current(DC) and Alternating Current (AC).

DC flow in one direction whereas AC flows in both direction, Backward and forward. so this solar generator’s basic job is to convert the DC power which it takes from the sunlight into the AC power that ca be further used for charging up the devices and etc.

You can rate the invertor, by looking at the maximum watts a generator withdraws in a particular time.

  • Price: Though prices matter whenever you buy something, in the context of solar generators, the price can’t be the only deciding factor; you have to pay attention to other factors like the watt, weight and quality and other important features discussed above.

For a rough idea, the prices of these generators can start from $500 and go upto $10,000, So choose accordingly.

What is the difference between a solar generator and a solar power station?

You may be familiar with old school power generators, which basically generate electricity from various energies, but in return, they release a lot of smoke and pollution residue.

To replace it with a good eco-friendly alternative come solar power stations or solar power generators. Although they both work on the same principle, they have some important differences.

These devices capture the sun’s energy through their panels, convert it into DC energy, and store them in batteries into AC energy, which you can use to power your appliances.

The batteries of these generators are small and convenient; It allows you to take electricity anywhere, you can even pack solar panels when not in use; This will save you time and maintenance. And it can be helpful for emergency blackouts.

Unlike generators, they are not portable as they are heavy; moreover, their solar panels are installed directly at your desired place. They generate power like solar generators by capturing and converting the solar power into AC charge, but they are installed permanently at a place, even if the panels are portable.

The best thing about this is that you don’t have to install it repeatedly; this device will always operate, and you’ll always receive the power, thanks to the permanent installment.

These power banks can be broken into different components, and you can expand those easily for extra power storage. Further, they’re a bit more expensive and will cost you thousands.

The only downside to owning these stations is with the maintenance part. as they’re mounted properly, they are constantly exposed to danger. To safeguard them, You might need to climb into the panels wherever they are installed.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes , solar power is worth every single penny. It is clean, versatile, and effective and can be a very good alternative option to the old-school power system. These generators operate on solar power, so you will be saving your fuel money that is required for the gasoline generators.

Another thing is that they need less maintenance than the gasoline ones. They are also quieter and will not give you a headache. Overall, unlike a gasoline generator, you will need to invest less frequently in solar generators.

Plus, these generators are extremely eco-friendly , by using them  you’ll be contributing something to nature. So we will give you a big thumbs up for going ahead with the solar generator.

To be honest, it depends upon the use and its application. Though each has its own significance, we can say that the solar power station outperforms the competition.

Solar generators are not for the long term as they do not produce and store large amounts of power, though they do work as a backup but not for a longer duration.

Whereas power stations are always operating , you don’t have to set it up again and again just like the generators. Just switch on the electric button when there is a blackout.

Unlike the generators, you can expand the battery capacity in this device, and if maintained well, this can last for literally decades.

We do not advise you to leave the stations plugged in because there have been a few incidents when batteries have been harmed when these power banks were left connected to them constantly.

You can keep track of your solar batteries with a voltmeter or multimeter. If the batteries are fully charged, and the excess energy is not given to somewhere else, the energy will get wasted and might damage the battery.

To avoid damaging the batteries in that situation, switches are typically fitted to reroute the electricity to the supplementary energy sources.

A power station may be the ideal option for power backup if you frequently travel on vacations, go camping, or attend festivals and you reside in an area that experiences frequent blackouts.

You can use these power plants as an emergency backup or to charge your tiny appliances, such as radios and cell phones. Even if you’re in the middle of nowhere, these gadgets will provide you with electricity.

They give power for a predetermined amount of time, and their performance is mostly affected by two elements: first, how well the device is maintained; and second, how frequently you use it. They are inexpensive, portable, and simple to install.

Portable power stations can be a useful option for charging your electronics during blackouts and power outages. And the most reliable way to power the refrigerator uninterrupted during a blackout may be to use a solar generator.

These generators can keep the refrigerator running for 3–15 hours, and in addition, this generator also eliminates the risk of carbon monoxide accumulation.

They are very easy to install, easy to move and, most importantly, eco-friendly. Pro Tip: Remember to consider the voltage and other specifications of your refrigerator before buying a solar generator to avoid any damage to the devices.

Final Verdict

The top solar generators do have some distinct advantages over fuel-powered equipment, but those benefits come at a very high price.

A portable solar generator, on the other hand, is the best option if you value that sense of security and protection knowing you have a backup energy source that isn’t always running out of fuel.

We’ve included the top budget-friendly solar generators above so you can compare them before making your choice.

However, if you have a somewhat larger budget, The Goal Zero Yeti 1500X Portable Power Station can be an excellent option. It has a mind-blowing 400,000 mAh, compared to the typical 10,000 mAh capacity of portable batteries.

The Yeti 1500X is a commendable and wise pick to go with because it can handle a variety of gadgets and can also recharge itself using solar power, making it suitable for camping and long-term off-grid travel.

However, you must choose the Jackery Portable Power Station Explorer 160 if you have a tighter budget, nevertheless. It can also offer Goal Zero Yeti 1500X Portable Power Station with fierce competition.
